It is surprising how Mercedes is able to squeeze its ranges to the fullest in order to increase the range of potential customers, with a multitude of versions for each model in its wide repertoire. However, as the spearhead we have the Mercedes-AMG S versions.

Keeping the three-door, Coupé and Cabriolet variants, the saloon is only available in a long wheelbase format, a simple indication of the public for whom this type of car is intended: to high positions and without time. It repeats the recipe used in others like the AMG SL, with two aesthetically and mechanically differentiated versions.

Exterior design

As we said, this performance version of the saloon of representation, the S-Class, offers two different options. Later we will explain what the differences between the two are, but now we have to talk about aesthetics.

Ignoring that difference in exterior finish, the rest of the changes applied by AMG on the outside are the same in both. New are the bumpers and grills, exclusive elements of these versions and that contribute to better aerodynamics and cooling.

With the view behind, the absence of any type of spoiler on the tailgate, lip type or retractable, stands out. What is not lacking is a huge and prominent diffuser with four trapezoidal tailpipes that also includes the reversing light.

Interior design

Once inside, the first thing we notice is the good integration that the new elements – more sporty – have in a cabin focused on comfort and luxury.

These AMG release a steering wheel in more elaborate shapes and various materials for the dashboard, such as carbon fiber and alcantara ; In addition, new, more striking shades such as red are included.

New front seats with more enveloping shapes have also been included. Another novelty in the interior is the integration of new exclusive AMG functions in the infotainment system, manageable via the touchpad on the center console and the touch panels on the steering wheel.

Versions

In total there are six different versions of the AMG S among all body styles and mechanics. Available in long wheelbase sedan bodywork, Coupé and Cabriolet, in combination with the V8 and V12 powertrain, although the differences between them end up being minimal and the smaller option is favored.

The V8 -S 63- debut a new 4.0-liter engine that replaces the previous 5.5-liter. It declares a maximum power of 612 hp and a torque of 900 Nm. With such power it reaches 100 km / h in just 3.5 seconds and a maximum speed limited to 250 km / h.

For their part, the V12 -S 65- maintain the same 6.0-liter engine as up to now, and deliver a power of 630 hp and a wild torque of 1 000 Nm. The maximum speed of this version is maintained with respect to the V8, but it is surprising that with 18 more HP its acceleration increases to 4.3 seconds from 0-100 km / h.

Both versions share a lowered and hardened suspension with three levels – Comfort, Sport and Sport + – that improve the behavior of the vehicle on the road; while always maintaining the high degree of comfort of an S-Class.

Record prices

If we look at the prices we will realize that it is one of the most expensive models of the brand, if not the most expensive. Starting from the saloon, we find prices of 197,500 and 287,100 euros depending on whether you opt for the S 63 and S 65 respectively.

At the same time, the even more premium positioning of the Coupé version raises the cost to a minimum of € 210,000 for the V8 and € 296,800 for the V12.

With regard to the Cabriolet version, the minimum price starts from 226,800 euros for the S63 and breaking the barrier of 300,000 euros is the S 65, for 307,400 euros.
