Mercedes-AMG C 43/63/63 S

The preparer of the German brand gives his saloon the sporting qualities that he has always displayed; not everything is related to the engines, exterior or interior aesthetics, but even the infotainment system has functions aimed at handling on the track

As he could not miss the party, the official preparer of Mercedes-Benz, AMG, has been commissioned to develop once again the latest generation of the performance saloon of the Segment D of the star brand, the C-Class.

The Germans offer up to three different power levels, which differ both mechanically and aesthetically. They are the AMG C43, AMG C63 and AMG C63 S, and they are available on all bodies in the C-Class:  saloon, station wagon , coupe and convertible.

Design

Leaving aside the visual differences between the different bodies of the C range, the two branches into which the versions of the Mercedes sports division are divided are also differentiated on the aesthetic level.

As for the AMG C43, the only notable difference is the use of a more sporty steering wheel, lined in alcantara and leather. For the rest, it could pass without problem as any C-Class equipped with an AMG Sport visual package. Too conservative.

However, for the ‘pata negra’, the AMG C63, the Germans have shone but well. The front features a unique grille with a new frame, bulging hood and a bumper with new shapes and (functional) air intakes. The widened wheel arches house huge 18- or 19-inch wheels, which hide sports brakes.

The rear, in all versions, has a small spoiler on the boot lid that helps keep the rear close to the ground at high speeds. This aerodynamic function is accompanied by the load generated by the large rear diffuser with four tailpipes.

Moving on to the interior, the main differences are a new steering wheel, sports seats with much more enveloping shapes and carbon fiber decorative moldings. In turn, exclusive functions have been included in the infotainment system focused on driving on the track.

Versions

As good performance versions of the C-Class, the powertrains are suitably sporty, with turbocharged V6 and V8 configurations and outputs ranging from 367 hp in the AMG C43 to 510 hp in the AMG C 63 S.

The range is divided into the AMG 43 and 63. The first of them makes use of the 4MATIC all-wheel drive, and is an intermediate step between the conventional range and the ‘black leg’. As for the two versions with a V8 engine, they make use of rear-wheel drive.

The ‘basic’ V8s deliver the not inconsiderable figure of 476 hp, but in case someone needs more power Mercedes offers the S versions, which raise the power to 510 hp. Both versions make use of rear wheel drive, while the 7-speed automatic transmission is equipped by default throughout the range.

Prices

The rates to get one of these very special cars start at 69,275 euros for the AMG 43 Coupé version, a figure that increases to 69,900, 71,375 and 75,225 euros for the saloon, Estate and Cabrio respectively.

For its part, the AMG 63 are available from 94,175 euros for the saloon and reaching a maximum of 107,249 euros in the case of the convertible. With respect to the 63 S, prices start from 103,550 euros for the saloon to 116,750 for the cabrio.

Therefore, it is located below the Mercedes-AMG E, what is known as the premium D segment . Its main rivals in the market are the BMW M3, the Audi RS4 Avant and the more powerful versions of the Jaguar XE among others.
