BMW M2 Competition: the best BMW of all time?

As has been expected for some time now, BMW has presented the new BMW M2 Competition, an updated and improved version of its smaller sports car. Aesthetic improvements to the running gear and chassis, as well as a new engine, are the necessary ingredients to create the best possible BMW ever.

Is this claim founded? Completely. If the normal BMW M2 has been praised by the press since its arrival on the market, now that it has elements taken directly from the BMW M4, we can face the perfect sports car.

Notable cosmetic changes

The front features a new, larger and more angular grille painted in gloss black. The molding located between both kidneys stands out, simulating a joined grill and resembling the ‘tiger nose’ of the most recent launches of the Korean manufacturer KIA.

The bumper has also been updated, with larger air intakes and extra cooling intakes, as well as a splitter in the lower area. In this case, the adaptive headlights with Full LED technology are included in the standard equipment (optional on the M2).

In profile, the intricate design of the new 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels is striking. In addition, BMW M has taken the opportunity and installed new mirrors, with shapes inspired by those of the old BMW M3, and which currently uses the same and the M4.

Concluding from behind, the changes come down to a new exhaust system. It maintains the four outputs, but has two flaps that control the output of sound and gases.

The changes made to the interior have also been relevant. Visually, the seat belts now feature M Motorsport’s corporate colors, the door sills feature model identification, real carbon fiber trim and a new instrument cluster.

In practical terms, we find a new set of seats, signed by M and covered in Dakota leather. Last but not least, the M1 and M2 buttons have been added to the steering wheel . This element has been taken from the BMW M5, and they are memories to save your favorite car configuration, twice.

specs

The most interesting point of the new BMW M2 Competition is in the least visible, the mechanics. The N55 engine block with sis cylinders and 370 hp says goodbye and gives way to an improved S55 engine, also turbocharged and with a power of 410 hp.

Along with the 410 CV of power, 550 Nm of torque is delivered , all of them transmitted to the ground only by the rear wheels. In honor of the purists, a six- speed manual gearbox is available, although a seven-speed DCT M automatic is available as an option.

It is able to sign a 0-100 km / h in just 4.2 seconds with automatic transmission and 4.4 seconds in the case of the manual, two tenths that nobody will mind losing in favor of a purer driving. To keep the engine running smoothly, a new cooling and lubrication system has been added.

The first one comes from the M4 Competition Package, and consists of a main radiator and two secondary ones on the sides. In addition, in the case of having an automatic transmission, a cooling system for the change oil is added.

Not only has the engine been the only one that has received changes with respect to a BMW M2, since numerous improvements have been made at the chassis level. To reinforce the front axle , the same carbon fiber riser bar of the BMW M4 has been introduced, from which it also borrows the entire suspension package.

The address has a new moron, like the ESP, less intrusive now. As a perfect accompaniment to the new wheels, new brakes  have been introduced , with 400 and 380 mm discs on the front and rear axles respectively, as well as 6 and 4-piston calipers.
