Maserati GranCabrio, the Italian beauty under the open sky

As if it were a fashion accessory, the Maserati GranCabrio is the epitome of what an Italian sports car should be : luxurious, beautiful and emotional. Based on the also award-winning Maserati GranTurismo, it blames the same maturity problems as this one, so for 2018 it has been updated from the same as its ‘brother’.

On the market since 2009, it is the second oldest model of the Italian manufacturer today, but it is still a bad product. It is still highly recommended, although it is easy to find more modern options that benefit from the latest technologies. However, where you put a Maserati …

Exterior design

Externally, it should be noted that the Maserati GranCabrio differs depending on the version chosen. In the case of the Sport, we find a sporty and classic image combined to perfection. There are no details that detract from the good work of Pininfarina.

For its part, the MC distances itself with a forceful air intake on the hood and a different rear, with new exhausts and diffuser. It also has a carbon fiber front lip – plastic on the Sport – and a new grille and bumper are included.

Interior design

Once we get settled in the cabin of the Maserati GranCabrio we realize that everything is in its place, and that it is a very familiar atmosphere. This is so because hardly any changes have been made here since they hit the market.

The highlight comes thanks to the latest renovation, which has included a new infotainment system with a 8.4-inch touch screen. This system is the same that equips the rest of the brand’s models such as the Ghibli and Levante, and incorporates the latest in connectivity among other functions.

Ignoring this element, it is a high-quality interior, as all surfaces are lined in Italian leather with rolled seams and moldings of all kinds of material. Carbon fiber, aluminum, wood …  You can configure your GranCabrio however you like, but everything has a price.

Old school engine

As is the case with the Maserati GranTurismo, in the latest renovation the range has been simplified. Both in the Sport trim and in the MC the same engine is mounted with almost identical performance. We find ourselves with an atypical engine these days: a 4.7-liter naturally aspirated V8, 460 hp of power and 520 Nm of maximum torque.

In these times, the possibility of buying an engine of this type is very scarce, so we are happy for the Italian despite its almost 10 years on the market. How could it be otherwise, all the power is transmitted to the ground by rear-wheel drive, associated with a 6-speed ZF automatic transmission.

Thanks to this engine, the Sport version accelerates from 0 to 100 km / h in just five seconds, and reaches a top speed of 288 km / h. In the case of the Maserati GranCabrio MC, these figures improve slightly, as acceleration is reduced to 4.9 seconds and top speed is increased to 291 km / h.

Almost 200,000 euros

The simplified range of the Maserati GranCabrio leaves us an interesting piece of information. It is the most expensive model of the firm at the same time as the least sold. For the rest, you can get one in a Sport finish for 170,400 euros.

In the case of the GranCabrio MC this figure increases, with a starting price of 184,000 euros. Of course, everything that increases the price will be because of the optional equipment, since according to the brand on its official website, these rates already include VAT and the registration tax corresponding to the characteristics of the car.
