Hyundai Veloster: An Interesting Asymmetry

Hyundai Veloster: an interesting asymmetry

The South Korean company has expanded its model range with the Hyundai Veloster. This vehicle has the curious novelty of having a door on the left side and two on the right. This solution is, for the moment, unique in the market.

Exterior of the Huyndai Veloster

There are two variants of the Veloster, the Turbo and the standard. The body of the former is 30mm shorter, due to the different design of the front and rear bumpers. On the other hand, the standard variant has a specific design side skirts, fog lights and front grill.

As for the wheels, they are 18 inches, optional in the standard version but standard in the Turbo model. The tires that surround them are of the Ventus Prime type, from the Hankook brand. On the other hand, the rear of the vehicle has a spoiler designed to improve the aerodynamics of the model through greater penetration, as well as increase stability at high speeds.

In terms of width, the Turbo model is 15 mm wider, while the height is fixed at 1,399 mm for both finishes. According to its size, one of the main competitors of this Hyundai Veloster is the famous Volkswagen Scirocco. The length of the standard model reaches 4.25 meters long. It is thus fixed in the dimensions of a compact model.

The interior of the Veloster

The Hyundai Veloster has 320 liters of capacity in the trunk. However, despite the generous and usable boot, the inlet for the load remains quite high, with a step of 30 cm to the bottom. This makes storage a bit difficult.

As for the front doors, the left is somewhat larger than the right, because on this second side there is also the right rear door. Through these doors you can access the rear seats, which can be folded to increase the load capacity of the trunk.

The front seats are very spacious at 990mm for the head and 1,114mm for the legs. In the rear there is less space, especially in height, since the head would be covered by the window of the trunk.

As for the materials, most are made of hard plastic, of considerable resistance. The big problem with this is the sound that can be produced if an object is carried in the storage spaces. This lack of padding is perhaps the biggest drawback to the Veloster’s interior design.

In terms of safety, the interior features six airbags and a five-star EuroNCAP score according to today’s stringent safety criteria.

The mechanics of the Veloster

With an average consumption of between 6.3 and 6.7 liters per 100 km, the Veloster’s 1.6 naturally aspirated engine has direct fuel injection that allows it to reach a maximum power of 186 hp. The lap rise leaves nothing to be desired, as it reaches almost 7,000 rpm. What’s more, if it weren’t for the design of the standard exhaust system, it would achieve even more.

Among the technology used in the Veloster’s drive are the optimized timing chain, a turbine integrated into the steel exhaust manifold and a variable valve lift system. In this way, the Veloster’s mechanics are perfectly up to par with its competitors.

The suspension has a fairly hard design but without being uncomfortable, which is a good adaptation for the normal use of the car. Oversteers are quickly resolved by the vehicle and are almost imperceptible. As for the brakes, the front axle discs have a diameter of 300 mm and have a ventilation system. Similar ones but 262 mm in diameter have been placed on the rear axle. The feel of the brake system is smooth and efficient.

Hyundai Veloster prices

Without having discounts of any kind, the Hyundai Veloster can be obtained for 29,630 euros. However, you can use promotional campaigns to save up to 2,743 euros, in addition to 755 euros if you are not already a Hyundai customer and up to 2,258 euros for the PIVE plan.

In this way, the Veloster can be obtained for about 24 629 euros, which leaves it at a somewhat expensive price compared to other models in the B segment, but attractive when taking into account that it is a vehicle with somewhat higher characteristics.
