Charging Points For Electric Cars In Spain

The cars that move by current are already a reality, with their advantages in terms of cost of operation and absence of emissions and, although there is still a lack of total consolidation of the technology, the trend is a constant commitment to this type of vehicle ; every time there are – and there will be many – more places to plug them in

There is no doubt that electrically powered cars are the evolution of private transportation. In addition to presenting itself as an economical option for drivers, its technology is futuristic and environmentally friendly.

But… What about the charging points for electric cars in Spain?

If we go to the statistics, in Spain there were just over 8,250 electric vehicles until the end of January last year. Some 5,000 had been enrolled in the last annual period, which indicates that the market generates attractiveness. And the points for recharging electricity are 2,511 nationwide, according to Electromaps.

Are there enough charging points in Spain and Europe? Is it inconvenient to still buy this type of car? The answer to this question, in reality, is complex and varied.

The problem of charging points for electric cars in Spain

If we only check the numbers, we can see that the ratio between charging points and electric cars is quite tight. Regulatory limitations and lack of project implementation seem to be the obstacles to overcome.

Most of the charging stations that exist are private, but they cannot charge for recharging. In most cases, this service is offered as an added value in the development of the commercial activity of each business.

Charging points only abound in metropolises

Another problem is the road distribution of power stations. Barcelona is the entity with the most positions, 462, while Madrid follows with 307 and, surprisingly, the Balearic Islands with 107 points. It is clear that it is easy to recharge in urban areas, but not in the outskirts of cities.

There is an idea among Spanish drivers that an electric car could leave us without a power supply at any time. Added to this, it is clear that the greatest source of electrical charge for these cars is in the owners’ homes.

And as long as the load admitted by this type of car is equivalent to routes of 300 to 400 kilometers, mistrust will exist. In contrast, many drivers who opt for this technology point out that everything is a matter of planning when traveling long distances.

Towards an infrastructure model

None of the above means that purchasing electric vehicles is a bad investment. On the contrary, these and those that use natural gas as fuel seem to be the future of transport on wheels. The only sure thing is that the infrastructure is in the process of creation and development.

And the projections are quite positive. There are several projects of chargers to build and others that will be installed in private businesses. The number of national and regional projects predict that things will change in the medium term.

The Tesla brand already has 90 charging stations in the country. In addition, Daimler, Ford and the BMW and Volkswagen groups seek to break autonomy through their joint venture: Lonily. The goal is to create 400 charging stations across Europe, and 2020 is the deadline for the joint feat.

Another highly anticipated international plan is the Lisbon-Paris connection, via Madrid. This would bring the installation of 25 new charging points for electric cars. The best thing is that you are thinking big: routes, long distances and connections between countries.

Regulatory and administrative changes

Only a cargo manager controlled by the Ministry of Economy is authorized to charge for the service. This affects, therefore, the interest of other companies that could enter the business of the so-called ‘electrolineras’.

The other drawback that these projects have at the moment is that the regulations governing the matter are new, precarious and must be improved.

But even with the administrative and legal pitfalls that the business entails, it seems that everything is going towards a successful conclusion. In short, electric cars are already a matter of the present, but as in all innovation there is an initial moment of adaptation.
