Difference In Price Of A Car In Different Countries

Supply and demand, purchasing power or the fact of having to import vehicles are important variables when determining what a model will cost.
Difference in price of a car in different countries

Depending on the economy of each country, cars can have different prices. Although this seems absurd, it is something that happens with any other product, whose prices are adapted to each market and the purchasing power of each country. We analyze the prices of a car in different countries.

Of course, we must bear in mind that, although generally the countries with greater purchasing power have higher prices for their products, this is not always the case. As an example, we show you below different models and the prices they present in various European countries.

Comparison of prices of a car in different countries

Among the 11 models shown below, we can see the comparison of prices in the five largest automotive markets in Europe. In the analysis it is clearly remarkable how in Germany there are several cheaper models, despite the fact that the purchasing power there is clearly higher than that of Spain or Italy, for example.

Conclusions of the comparison

As we can see, the price differences of a car in different countries can be abysmal. Spain appears as one of the countries with the most expensive models, in general. In this sense, the case of the Porsche 911 Turbo S stands out especially, which has a difference of more than 40,000 euros between the prices of Spain and the United Kingdom, or of almost 30,000 if we compare it with the price of Germany.

Spain also has a much higher price in the SEAT Ibiza than in Italy, where the cost of this model is around 3,000 euros less. On the other hand, we are winning with the Opel Insignia or the BMW 528i, models in which we save several thousand euros compared to prices in other countries.

Why do car prices change in different countries?

As we have mentioned, any company adapts the prices of the products that it puts on sale according to the economy of each country. The purchasing power or the sales possibilities in each country make the prices of the same item, such as a car in this case, undergo significant changes.

Of course, the process of importing or exporting components also plays a role. Each company has different manufacturing centers. In this sense, having to import models from other countries, or import components for their manufacture, can make the price of a vehicle more expensive.

On the other hand, there are fashions. Each model can be more or less successful in a certain country or in a certain market depending on the attractiveness it may have for its population and for the brand’s potential clients. This makes the price go up or down according to the laws of supply and demand in each country.

Prices according to the average wages of each country

We have already talked about how the purchasing power of each country can influence the prices of each model. However, it has also been seen in the table above how some models are considerably cheaper in countries with higher purchasing power.

To finish illustrating these differences, we are going to show below a list of the annual average gross wages of the different countries of Europe, with data from 2008:

  • United Kingdom: € 46,058
  • Holland: € 42,720
  • Germany: € 40,914
  • Belgium: € 39,343
  • Austria: € 38,622
  • Sweden: € 36,586
  • Finland: € 36,128
  • France: € 32,867
  • Spain: € 21,500
  • Portugal: € 17,179
  • Hungary: € 9,899
  • Slovakia: € 8,353
  • Romania: € 5,479
  • Bulgaria: € 2,862

The average of the European Union in these salaries is 27,036 euros, which leaves Spain below the average salary. Even so, we see how many car models are considerably more expensive in our country than in others with significantly higher average gross wages, such as the United Kingdom or Germany.
