Hyundai I30 CW, Don’t Skimp On Suitcases

With a very successful design compared to the competition, this station wagon that starts from the base of a compact has a very good size-habitability ratio

How could it be otherwise, the interesting Korean model also has a family version, called Hyundai i30 CW, which is short for CrossWagon, and with which the brand wants to stand up to the best-selling models in our country, such as the Renault Megane ST or the Seat León ST.

Until a few years ago there were few family models that were seen on our roads, something that does not happen in countries like Germany, where this configuration accounts for the largest number of sales.

We Spaniards care a lot about the aesthetics of the car and it is true that,  until a few years ago, the models with this type of bodywork were much less aesthetically pleasing than now.

Today, depending on the model, they are even prettier than their four-door siblings, and their boot capacity and shape make them much more practical.

Design

Replacing the 2012 model, the 2017 i30 CW debuted significant cosmetic changes that refresh its lines. Its front has a large ventilation grille and sharp headlights, which give the Hyundai i30 CW a more sporty look.

The side line, unlike other competitors, is very successful, with a certain coupe air that gives it a very progressive drop in the roof and almost triangular boot windows.

The rear is much more attractive than the previous generation. With slimmer and elongated drivers, it hardly loses the sporty line of the five-door version. The rear window is quite slanted, so it does not give the ‘square rear’ feeling that some family members do.

Inside

At 4.58 meters in length, it is no less than 24 centimeters longer than the five-door version. Like the model from which it comes, in the front seats we have quite a feeling of space, with a multifunction screen that presides over the upper part of the dashboard and very intuitive controls.

In the rear seats, the space is the same except for the height to the ceiling, where it gains a few centimeters. This occurs because the roof takes longer to start to fall than on a five-door model. If these seats stand out in something , it is in the space available for the legs and the width at the height of the shoulders.

It is, without a doubt, one of the best compacts to accommodate three adults in these seats, similar to the Kia Ceed. A Peugeot 308 or a Volkswagen Golf have narrower seats.

If someone buys a relative, it is through the trunk. With 602 liters, it is one of the benchmarks in the segment, only surpassed by the Volkswagen Golf Variant, with 605 liters and the Honda Civic Tourer, with 624 liters.

Dynamic

On fast roads, such as motorways or motorways, you will not be able to notice significant differences with respect to the dynamism that the five-door version delivers. It is a very neutral car, with very predictable reactions and very good linear stability.

The suspension setting has no sporting pretensions, it holds the bodywork quite well, but on curvy roads it does not generate the confidence that, for example, a Seat Leon or a Ford Focus gives you. However, it moves with enough agility to circulate at a high pace without problems.

Engines

It has the same engines as the five-door i30 except for the basic 1.6-liter diesel with 95 hp and the powerful two-liter gasoline that the i30 N mounts. With this, we can choose between four engines: two gasoline and two diesel.

  • Gasoline : the base engine starts from a liter of displacement with turbo and has 120 hp of power. This configuration can only be selected with the basic Klass trim and gives the Hyundai i30 CW correct performance, as it goes from 0 to 100 km / h in 11.4 seconds. Above we have a block of 1.4 liters with turbo and 140 hp.
  • Diesel : with the 1.6-liter block, we have two power scales, one with 110 and the other with 136 hp. Given the vehicle’s load capacities, our advice is to purchase the higher power option, as it greatly improves the car’s acceleration capacity and consumption does not vary with respect to the 110 hp one.

conclusion

It makes more and more sense to buy a family model instead of the compact version. They offer a much greater cargo space and their design is as beautiful as that of their brothers.

The Germans have been convinced before us of the capabilities of these vehicles, which in many cases are a better option than a compact SUV, since they enjoy better stability and a boot with more usable shapes.

At the moment, the level of sales of this Hyundai i30 CW does not accompany it, but the Korean is a very balanced option in everything. If you have a family, you will fall in love with its trunk.
