Our country is a true benchmark in terms of production and export of vehicles worldwide. Car factories in Spain, and those dedicated to components related to the motor world, add up to 10% of GDP and employ nearly two million people.

In addition, the figure does not stop growing and has managed to increase production by 11% in the last year, reaching almost 2.5 million vehicles. Regarding exports outside the EU, the figure has doubled in the last four years and the trend remains positive.

We have a total of eight brands dedicated to the manufacture of cars distributed throughout the Spanish territory, several of them with several factories in different points. Let’s analyze what and where we Spanish make:

Renault

The factories of the French brand have a lot of weight in the economy of our country. With a presence in Valladolid, Palencia and Seville, it has a total of almost 7,800 employees in its ranks.

The Valladolid plant, with 2 460 workers, manufactures around 700 daily units of the Renault Captur and 5 weekly units of the Renault Twizy, which has the honor of being the first 100% electric vehicle manufactured in Spain.

From the modern factory in Palencia comes the Renault Megane, with its four different bodies, ready to be distributed around the world.

PSA Group

The Madrid plant employs 2,100 employees and produces around 200,000 units per year and is currently where 100% of the world’s Citroën Cactus comes from.

Vigo’s is even larger, with 6,300 workers and a production capacity of 2,300 vehicles per day. Currently there are only about 1,800 cars out of its plant that are distributed around the world, with models such as the Citroën C4 Picasso, Citroën C-Élysée, Citroën Berlingo electric and Peugeot Partner also electric.

Opel (GM)

The Figueruelas plant (Zaragoza) is one of the most powerful car factories in Spain in the sector. Built in 1982, it is capable of producing 480,000 vehicles a year, for a total of 2,150 a day. In addition, it manufactures a large number of mechanical and structural components.

It has 5,700 employees who give life to models as important to the brand as the utility Opel Corsa or the Opel Mokka and are specialized in models that run on LPG. 95% of the production ends in countries such as Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, France or Turkey.

Seat Martorell

With 400,000 vehicles a year, the Martorell plant is the largest Seat has in the world ; It could not be otherwise as it is a Spanish brand.

 

Responsible for the manufacture of the Ibiza and the León in its three bodies, the Altea, Altea XL and the Altea Freetrack. In addition, this plant leaves the Audi Q3, a model that is only manufactured in these Catalan lands. 81% of the Spanish group’s production comes from here and almost all of them were exported to countries such as Germany, the United Kingdom, France, Mexico or Algeria, among others.

Volkswagen

It has a single factory, located in Pamplona since 1965, but we are facing one of the most powerful car factories in Spain in the sector, capable of producing 5% of the total vehicles manufactured by Volkswagen, a huge figure given the dimensions and the production capacity of the German giant.

With a total of 4,919 employees, it is capable of producing between 1,400 and 1,800 units of the Volkswagen Polo per day, the only model they make, for a total of 289,589 units last year.

Nissan Motor Iberica

With factories in Ávila, Barcelona and Cantabria, the Grupo Renault brand has a total of 5,138 workers. From the Barcelona plant come the Nissan Navara, Pathfinder and NV200 and also, although to a lesser extent, the Nissas eNV200.

The Avila plant specializes in parts, from brake discs to steering knuckles, and the Cantabria plant in industrial vehicles.

Ford Almussafes

Located in Valencia, it is one of the most efficient car factories in Spain today. It has a railway line to improve the transport of goods and its suppliers are located relatively close. In addition, it has a very extensive vehicle production, with the Ford Kuga, Tourneo and Transit.

In this factory, Mazda brand vehicles have been manufactured, due to the alliance between the two brands when it comes to sharing components.

Mercedes Benz

Specializing in vans, the Álava-based Mercedes-Benz factory opened in 1954 and has since manufactured more than 1.8 million vehicles.

Currently, the plant focuses on the Vito and the V-Class (successor to the Viano). The latter was a challenge for the factory, as Mercedes imposed specific manufacturing processes, but the factory met German requirements with flying colors.
