In the same way as in practically the entire Mercedes range, the firm’s grand tourer par excellence, the SL, is also presented in its best clothes once it has been modified by the engineers of AMG, the sports subsidiary of the company. Mark.

It is a completely passionate vehicle, a purchase without reason as they say. Although it is an excellent car and perfectly fulfills its mission, it is perhaps one step behind its rivals, such as the BMW M6, the Jaguar F-Type R or the Aston Martin Vantage and DB11, among others. .

Do you want it gross or flashy?

Externally, the main differences with respect to any other conventional SL are a specific body kit more sporty, aerodynamic and with greater cooling, different designs for the wheels  and some more details such as the emblems.

However, the fact that there are two totally opposite customization possibilities is welcome . On the one hand, the car can look sporty and ‘gross’, or it can be configured to look luxurious to ostentatious.

It all depends on the version you choose. The sporty look is left to the AMG SL 63, as all the decorative trims are painted in gloss black, a color that perfectly matches the idea of ​​a high-performance vehicle.

On the other hand, for the AMG SL 65 all the black moldings have been replaced by a chrome finish, which goes hand in hand with a representative and luxury vehicle; although we understand that for a sports car of more than 600 CV it does not finish convincing, and more when we see the bill that has to be paid.

A cabin that invites you to drive

Another song is the interior, which to the brilliant work done on the current SL has been added a thicker steering wheel and sport-cut seats signed by AMG, which pick up the body very well and give the cabin a much more youthful appearance. ‘racing’ . Turbocharged V8 and V12 engines

It should be noted that, as in other models of the firm, the AMG version is available in two levels of motorization; and as a key detail they do not have the same block.

The access version, the AMG SL 63 mounts a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V8 engine, which delivers a total power of 585 hp and a staggering 900 Nm of torque. The chosen transmission is a 7-speed automatic transmission called AMG SPEEDSHIFT MCT.

Its benefits are heart-stopping, and that is that it covers 0-100 km / h in just 4.1 seconds, a figure that could be slightly lower if it does not have a more linear power delivery, but the truth is that so much torque is made notice. For its part, the top speed is electronically limited to 250 km / h.

As for the AMG SL 65, it equips a huge V12 biturbo 6.0 engine – a species in extinction – and it delivers a brutal figure of 630 hp, and reaches the barrier of 1 000 Nm of torque. Quite a beast to burn tires. Unlike the conventional SL, this version has a different transmission than the other model, in this case the AMG SPEEDSHIFT PLUS 7G-TRONIC box.

Elegant and sporty at the same time, the Mercedes AMG SL color scheme can give it a luxurious and youthful touch at the same time.

The performance of the AMG SL 65 is not much better than the AMG SL 63, and is not reflected in its figures. Acceleration barely improves a tenth (now 4.0 seconds exact) and speed remains limited to 250 km / h. Again, such amount of torque takes its toll if power is not transmitted in a controlled way, so 4Matic all-wheel drive would be perfect for this car.

The price list is somewhat interesting in the case of the car that concerns us, and is that the difference between the V8 and the V12 version is almost 100,000 euros. With an AMG SL 65 starting at 290,350 euros, it is difficult to find any reason why to choose this and not the small one, since as we have seen before, the differences are limited to an extra power that hardly affects the real performance and some minor aesthetic detail.

In general, both for its performance and the price range in which this special SL is a tough rival for a housemate, the spectacular AMG GT. Which to choose? It depends on several factors, not to mention that you may like one more than the other visually.

Among these factors is the most modern technology equipment and a two-seater supercar that is perfect for the track or a comfortable gran turismo with which to have the possibility to race everything you want and more. In case you want the latter, the AMG SL is your car.
