Mercedes G-Class 2018, If Something Works Don’t Touch It

The benchmark SUV of the German brand is renewed in a generation that, yes, respects the original DNA; maintains the interior and exterior aesthetic line, but is more refined and includes state-of-the-art technological equipment

After a long wait, the first month of the new year 2018 has brought us one of the most anticipated launches of recent times: the new generation of the Mercedes G-Class, the fireproof all-rounder from the German firm. At first glance it may look like the same car, but it has undergone changes in all respects.

It perfectly fulfills the saying of “if something works, don’t touch it”, and that is that the fans were scared by how the mythical 4 × 4 could change. Fortunately, and as has happened with the new Jeep Wrangler, it is still first and foremost a G-Class.

Evolution to modernity

The exterior of the new SUV from the star brand may seem the same as always, but nothing could be further from the truth: it has changed in everything. Its dimensions have increased by 5.3 and 12.1 centimeters in length and width respectively (4.82 meters in length and 1.99 in width),  although the height remains intact.

The main changes are a few new bumpers more immersive and  technology Full LED  apadtativa for headlamps front and rear. More unnoticed are the new wheel arches, much better integrated into a set that, otherwise, remains as classic and rough as ever.

Interior of pure luxury

It is here where the changes made by the brand are most noticeable and where it differs most from the previous model. As it is presented now, the cabin could well pass as that of the most luxurious saloon of the firm, the S-Class , the previous model inherits the verticality of the dashboard and the striking handle for the passenger.

Although more modernized, the feeling of robustness given off by the dashboard of the previous generation remains intact.

Apart from these classic elements, everything else is brand new. Now you can optionally equip the digital panel with two 12.3-inch displays, which act as a dashboard and multimedia system. As for the first, behind the wheel, it is customizable and has three different designs by default.

Regarding the multimedia system, it integrates the latest innovations in terms of connectivity, in addition to being able to choose between the various driving modes available from one of the many menus it has. To control this system, the brand has integrated the familiar touchpad touch with joystick in the center of the center console.

The controls for the radio and air conditioning are also new, already in the line of other models; highlights the design of the ventilation intakes that include LED lighting. As it could not be otherwise in a G-Class, the controls for the differentials are located in a privileged place on the dashboard.

A single motor available

By the time Mercedes’ new off-road vehicle hits the market next May, only one mechanical option will be available, which is quite important. It is the G 500, and it is equipped with a huge 4.0-liter biturbo V8 engine with 422 hp of power and 610 Nm of torque,  which certifies a consumption of 11.1 l / 100 km.

The aesthetics of the new G-Class is just as recognizable as that of previous generations.

In combination with this engine we find the well-known 9G-TRONIC 9-speed automatic transmission  and, as a good off-road vehicle, it has a reducer. Obviously, it makes use of the 4MATIC all- wheel drive system , with the exception that this model – in the old fashioned way – has  three locking differentials.

Price

The official presentation of this new generation of the G-Class has taken place recently. Specifically, it was released on January 15, 2018 at the Detroit Auto Show. Surprisingly, the firm has decided to increase the sale price of this new generation.

The new model will be available from 127,450 euros, which represents an increase of 4,175 euros compared to the outgoing generation, money that could well be spent on the expense of extra equipment.
