Should There Be A Special License To Drive Supercars?

Although there is no such requirement, some exclusive brands of high-performance cars impose their own requirements to sell their units to whoever they deem appropriate.
Should there be a special license to drive supercars?

Due to the high power and high speeds of some models, there is debate as to whether there should be a special license for driving supercars. We analyze the situation of this debate.

Special license to drive supercars: urban legend?

Of course, this rarely widespread belief is nothing more than an urban legend. Super sports cars, although they belong to a fairly distinguished category in terms of mechanics, power and driving capabilities, are cars like any other. Therefore, no special license is required to drive supercars.

The European Class B permit

This type of driving license is the most common among drivers, and enables the following:

  • Automobiles whose maximum authorized mass does not exceed 3,500 kilos  that are designed and built for the transport of no more than 15 passengers in addition to the driver. Said automobiles may be hooked up to a trailer whose maximum authorized mass does not exceed 750 kilos.
  • Combined vehicle assemblies made up of a towing vehicle authorized to drive by the class B license and a trailer whose maximum authorized mass exceeds 750 kg, provided that the maximum authorized mass of the assembly does not exceed 4 250 kg, without prejudice of the provisions that the type approval standards establish for these vehicles.

If the driving license or permit has been issued in Spain, it will be valid for the entire European Union. If the permit has been obtained in another country outside the European Union, it must be exchanged, as the case may be, at the corresponding provincial Traffic Headquarters.

Every driving license or permit has a maximum validity date, upon which the driver must renew it and take a psychotechnical exam. This is similar to the one you did when you first got it, on which your renewal will depend, since it assesses whether the driver continues to be physically able to drive.

For all this, with this type of license you can drive any type of supercar, as long as the legal requirements of the driver’s license are correct and in order.

The requirements to buy certain models of supercars

Although it is clear that no special license is necessary to drive supercars, there are some firms that impose certain requirements in order to buy one of their models. This is due, neither more nor less, to a way that certain brands have to maintain a certain degree of exclusivity.

Some examples are the necessary requirements to acquire a Ferrari, a McLaren or a Porsche 918. The purchase process will be longer and more laborious than with vehicles of another category, although it must be taken into account that the same thing can happen if we want to get a table for dine in a fancy restaurant instead of a fast food one.

Ferrari Enzo 2002

We know for sure that several clients in Spain are already waiting for the arrival of their brand new sports cars. Which means that, any day when you leave the house, you could find a million euro sports car rolling around like any other utility vehicle.

In the case of German brands, neither McLaren nor Porsche impose strict conditions of brand loyalty ; they do not require having previously acquired one of their sports cars.

However, it is more than evident that those who buy a McLaren P1 will have owned a -12C, and that those who are going to get a Porsche 918 Spyder will have already enjoyed several ‘nine-eleven’ in their garage.

Ferrari exclusivity

On the other hand, Ferrari is still a traditional family and Luca di Montezemolo prefers a solemn proposal of hand and ensure that his daughter, LaFerrari, will only marry a good family with close ties to those of Maranello.

It will be the brand who contacts you to offer it after having analyzed your application. The requirements established by the brand may vary in different markets, but in the case of Spain it was a  sine qua non condition to have bought seven Ferraris in the last three years, including a limited edition such as the Ferrari 599 itself.
